Event Info
In 1978, Dave McGillivray began his first cross country journey, running 3,452 miles in 80 days from Medford, OR, to Medford, MA — his hometown. Forty-two years later we're giving you the opportunity to run in Dave's footsteps with the Medford2Medford: Run Across America. Participants can register as part of a team or as individuals to virtually run/walk/cycle their way across the country.
Distances
The Medford2Medford virtual run recreates Dave’s journey across the continental United States. 3,452 miles over the course of a couple of months (or even longer) is a big undertaking, so we’re offering two other distances to choose from. Feel free to run/walk, cycle, or a combination to virtually make your way to Medford, Massachusetts.
Medford2Medford: Run Across America
Complete 3,460 miles solo or with a team of up to 20 members.
TheMissippi2Medford: The Eastern States
Complete 1,215 miles solo or with a team of up to 10 members.
Massachusetts2Medford: The Home Stretch
Complete 152 miles solo or with a team of up to 5 members.
Timeframe
Registration will remain open through, August 29, 2020, the anniversary of when Dave McGillivray completed his 3,452-mile trek. However, this event continues until November 17, so there’s plenty of time to log those miles.

Registering
Click the “Register Now” link on the home page. You’ll be taken to our registration platform at Race Roster, where you’ll be asked to create an account, if you don’t already have one. Once you select your registration package of choice, you’re all set! You’ll be sent a welcome email with instructions on how to input your progress.
Teams
The Medford2Medford is an opportunity to virtually bring together your active friends and family and collaborate toward a shared goal. Team up with fellow runners or cyclists, or even the friend who prefers walking to both. You can create a team of all runners/walkers, all cyclists, or a mix of all.
You and your teammates can log miles once a day or multiple times a day (if you’re the over-achieving types). If you forget to log your miles from the previous day—no problem! Add them to the system when you remember. You can get in your mileage any way you prefer—outside on the roads, or inside on a stationary bike or treadmill… your choice! This challenge is for YOU—to keep you fit during unconventional times, so it’s up to you as to how you want to do that.
Create a Team as Team Captain
The Medford2Medford is an opportunity to virtually bring together your active friends and family and collaborate toward a shared goal. Team up with fellow runners or cyclists, or even the friend who prefers walking to both. You can create a team of all runners/walkers or a mix of runners/walkers and cyclists.
If you’d like to create a team you can do when submitting your own registration. From there, you can invite others to your team with a custom link. Each team will get its own page where you can keep track of and message all your team members.
Join an Existing Team
There are multiple ways to join an existing team when you register. On the registration landing page you’ll see a “View teams” button on the left of the page where you can search for an existing team and join. Alternatively, you can select an existing team on the standard registration page—just select your team from the list provided. Lastly, a team captain can send you a personalized link to register with the team.
Once You’ve Registered
Adding Daily Mileage
Within 24 hours of registering and receiving a confirmation email from Race Roster, you’ll receive another email (or two if you’re a captain) that contain your personal links for tracking mileage. (Please note: If registering on the weekend, this additional email will arrive the following Monday.) Save these emails, or better yet, bookmark them to your web browser! You will use this links to add your daily mileage into the tracking system. Click the link in the email and follow these directions for getting started. The additional link that team captains receive lets them view and edit the mileage of all their team members as well.
If you use Strava your data will import and you can select the workouts you want to upload. This can be done multiple times a day. There are instructions in the tracking site that will guide you on linking your Strava profile. If you are manually tracking your miles, you may also add mileage to the tracking system as often as you need.
Fundraising
Although fundraising is not required, we’d love for you to join us in support any of the excellent charities on our Beneficiaries page that have partnered with Medford2Medford. M2M is keeping with the spirit of Dave’s 1978 cross-country run, during which he raised $100,000 for the Jimmy Fund. Below are our current affiliated charities; when registering, you can find them on the registration page under the “Fundraising organizations” header on the left side of the screen.
If you would like to raise money for a local charity that is near and dear to you, email info@dmsesports.com to inquire about adding them as a charity partner.
